Collaboration Between JEREDIS and Burundi YMCA: Promoting Peace Through Football
1 November 2025, at ECOFO EPJP Nyakabiga in Bujumbura
As part of the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Club Project led by Burundi YMCA, JEREDIS and Burundi YMCA jointly conducted a training session for young peace ambassadors on Saturday, 1 November 2025, at ECOFO EPJP Nyakabiga in Bujumbura. The objective of this initiative was to promote the principles of Agenda 2250: Youth, Peace and Security through the unifying power of football.
This project supports the Government of Burundi’s National Strategy on Youth, Peace and Security, developed in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which recognizes young people as key actors in peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
The Director of ECOFO EPJP Nyakabiga warmly welcomed the project and expressed sincere appreciation to JEREDIS and Burundi YMCA for their commitment to empowering youth as peacebuilders. The school’s peace club currently counts 71 active members, including 35 girls, demonstrating strong inclusion and gender balance.
During the training, participants explored the five pillars of Agenda 2250 — participation, protection, prevention, partnership, and disengagement/reintegration — which emphasize the central role of youth in fostering peace and social cohesion.
By recognizing young people as partners rather than mere beneficiaries, JEREDIS and Burundi YMCA reaffirm their joint commitment to establishing peace clubs that serve as platforms for dialogue, leadership training, and civic engagement, using football as a catalyst for unity and positive social change.
Currently, the project is being implemented in four schools in Bujumbura and two in Butanyerera, reaching dozens of young people dedicated to building a peaceful and inclusive Burundi.
JEREDIS and Burundi YMCA jointly ran the peace club at ECOFO Murweza with the aim of promoting Agenda 2250: youth-peace-security (YPS).On Thursday, 30 October 2026, at ECOFO Rweza, a YPS club activity was held to strengthen cohesion, promote peace and develop youth leadership with the aim of promoting Agenda 2250: Youth-Peace-Security.
The theme of the activity was: " Building peace through sport and art." Jeredis and Burundi YMCA are convinced that a ball can become an instrument of reconciliation.
The 115 young participants, including 61 girls, were made aware of and equipped with the crucial role they play in building peace and security through the pillars of the YPS Agenda 2250, using football as a tool for engagement, dialogue and social transformation.
The young people were taught that they are not only victims or perpetrators of conflict, but essential partners in contributing to a peaceful, just and inclusive world.‘Being young means rejecting hatred and choosing peace.’
L'approche communautaire est beaucoup privilégiée dans la promotion et capitalisation de la paix au Burundi.
Le dialogue communautaire est une méthode incontournable pour maintenir la paix au niveau communautaire.
